QDMA National and PA State Chapter comments on Sunday Hunting
Antlerless Tags May Now be Transferred to Mentored Youth Hunters in PA
On June 17th., the Pennsylvania Legislature passed SB 274, which will allow for the transfer of an antlerless tag from the adult hunter present and mentoring the youth at the time of harvest. Prior to this change, a mentored youth, by law, could only harvest an antlered deer. The mentored youth hunting program was originally established in PA in 2006.
SB 274 was an idea conceived by two QDMA members in Pennsylvania. With QDMA solidly behind them, they garnered support from the National Wild Turkey Federation, Pheasants Forever, United Bowhunters of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania Federation of Sportsman’s Clubs, the NRA, Pennsylvania Crossbow Federation, and the owners and membership of www.huntingpa.com; which provided a broad grass roots support of the bill. From conception in 2008, the bill took only three years to pass both chambers of the House (200-0) and Senate (50-0) unanimously and will be signed into law by Governor Tom Corbett on June 24th.
Board of Commissioners gave final adoption to the regulation on Tuesday, June 28th.
These same individuals are working on establishing a mentored adult hunting program in Pennsylvania and it is expected to help circumvent the national downward trend in recruitment and retention rates.
